Considering poaching and illegal trafficking of animal parts tends to be highest in areas of poverty and corruption, where violence and high mortality is commonplace anyways, it's actually not surprising.

He could easily die there if he wouldn't change his spot and considering his brain power, I highly doubt it would happen without the interference of those lions!!!
